Jonathan Ausseresse is a contemporary glass artist with outstanding technical mastery and experimental creativity.
Trained at the École Supérieure de Design et des Métiers d’Art d’Auvergne and deeply influenced by his early experience in his father’s workshop, he developed a profound understanding of glass and its transformative potential.
Specializing in enamel work, thermoforming, and the use of volcanic materials, Ausseresse combines scientific precision - particularly in his use of metallic oxides and firing techniques - with a sensitivity to chance and natural processes.
He is the winner of the National Competition of Ateliers d’Art de France in 2021 and best apprentice in France in 2013 (Glass Decoration specialty).
The signature piece is part of the the Fluence collection, which comes from Jonathan Ausseresse’s expertise in enamel sprinkling and his research into deep-coloured glass. It features transparent glass forms with bright, acidic tones, set on raw volcanic rock from the Auvergne volcanoes.
In this work, Ausseresse explores how molten glass moves and flows. He developed a process that allows him to draw and record these movements within the glass itself, capturing its internal flow and transformation under high heat. The glass then freezes this motion, preserving a moment of movement—like a wave or a flow suspended in time.
Combined on rough volcanic stone, the smooth glass creates a strong contrast while also echoing the nature of the rock beneath it, once molten lava that flowed down volcano slopes before quickly cooling and hardening - just like glass in a furnace.
